The Alpena

The 520’ self unloading freighter Alpena takes full advantage of her Caterpillar power!  She has TWO 3512s feeding out of a 10,000 gallon tank generating 850 kw each to power the boat and conveyor systems.  A CAT 398 with its own 7,500 gallon tank serves as the bow thruster for docking and maneuvering in those “tight” spaces.

“We’re going through filters left and right.” Fleet Chief Pete Crowell told Fleet Chief Engineer Rob Snyder, “Call Torre at Diesel Fuel Doctor and fix it.”  After a discussion  about tank size, fuel line size, and horsepower for the big CATs, a healthy dose of Algae-X AFC-705 fuel catalyst was recommended to eliminate the immediate sludge problem and Algae-X LG-X 1500 series in-line fuel conditioners were installed to prevent any future buildup.  The result?  Increased filter life, decreased fuel related maintenance costs, and lower emissions.

Inland Lakes Management was formed in March of 1987 to operate and  manage the Huron Cement (National Gypsum) fleet following the purchase of National Gypsum by Lafarge Corp on January 1st, 1987.  The Alpena is the largest of the ILM fleet.  Her little sisters are the J.A.W. Iglehart and the Paul H. Townsend.
