“G” Tug Wisconsin

We should all hope to look this good when we’re over 100!!!  Great Lakes Towing tug Wisconsin was built in 1897 and still leads the way when she needs to!  She is shown here leading a “dead boat pull” of the freighter John Sherwin during the summer of 2006.  She escorted the 806’ Sherwin down Lake Michigan during the 2006 shipping season.

Towing a boat that can hold 31,000 tons of cargo is not the time to clog filters, go down on power, or - worst of all - go dead in the water.  That, however, was an ongoing battle for the engineer on board.  “We were having a horrible problem with sludge plugging the filters.”  Because  this style of tug is often in port for long periods of time and then used at maximum capability for short periods, sludge buildup and fuel degradation are a constant problem in this industry.

To combat the sludge in the tank , stabilize the fuel, and help relieve the maintenance issues involved with this type of operation, Great Lakes Towing has begun use of the Algae-X AFC-705 fuel catalyst.  Use of biocides is eliminated and there is a reduction in the filter usage on the boat.
